Adjusting and dusting

When adjusting the pictures for reasons such as cleaning it and dusting it, you should do this in a secure and safe place. Bring this to a table that is clean from dust, dirt, wetness or any type of similar material. Make sure that the place is also free from any type of food, drinks, paints, glue, ink or any type of chemical. In short, the table must be thoroughly clean and free from any needless item. Thus, before bringing the archival photos to the area you plan to work in, clean the work table carefully. Then, when touching the pictures, do so in the gentlest manner that's possible. You should also put on a pair of latex gloves the entire time you'll be manipulating the photographs instead of touching it with your bare hands. Then, when dusting them to clean them off of dust, utilize a soft brush. And every few minutes, clean the brush to remove the accumulated dirt from it and keep them from getting back to the photos.

Selecting the right album

If you decide that you need to utilize another form of holder for your photos apart from the archives, your next best option is to use an album. Most albums are made from magnetic pages with a small amount of adhesive and clinging plastic to keep the photos in place, as well as pages inside vinyl sleeves. And while you can use these types of albums to keep your photographs, there is still a better way to keep them. Albums that don't involve any type of plastic but just plain archival plastics will aid your pictures to last for a long time, particularly when acid-free paper is being utilized. And instead of glues, use picture corners to keep each of the pictures in place. Then, you must keep the albums in a place far from direct sunlight, smoke, or moisture.

Keeping your pictures in frames

Putting a vintage picture inside a frame isn't a very advisable thing to do to such a picture. This is because, placing a picture inside a picture frame will mean exposing the picture to light. Light is one of the opponents of vintage photos, which can accelerate their deterioration. Nonetheless, there are ways that you can lessen the damage which framing can cause. For one thing, ensure that you do not place the framed vintage picture in a place where sunlight is present. Even strong artificial lights will have a similar effect as sunlight, so keep your framed pictures from these, as well. Even though acrylic ultraviolet filters are not totally effective, utilizing them to shield the photographs can still help to decrease the damage that their exposure can cause. It's also highly recommended that you select frames which are made of steel, rather than wood. This is because wood excretes some form of chemical over time.

Make sure that you always store these photographs in a dark place, as much as possible, after every time you view them.
